How Long to Boil Shrimp for a Seafood Boil

Shrimp can go from tender and juicy to rubbery in just a few minutes, which is why timing matters in a seafood boil. The easiest way to get better results is to cook the potatoes, sausage, and corn first, then add the shrimp near the very end.

How Long Does Shrimp Take to Boil?

For thawed medium to large shrimp, plan on roughly 2 to 3 minutes once the water returns to a simmer. Jumbo shrimp often need closer to 3 to 4 minutes. Exact timing depends on shrimp size, how crowded the pot is, and how much the water temperature drops when the shrimp are added.

If you are starting with frozen shrimp, the pot will cool down more and the shrimp can cook less evenly. Thawing them first gives you more control.

How to Tell When Shrimp Are Done

  • The flesh should turn opaque instead of translucent.
  • The outside should look pink with natural color variation.
  • The shrimp should curl into a loose C shape. A very tight curl can be a sign they have cooked too long.
  • The texture should feel firm but still tender.

When Should Shrimp Go Into a Seafood Boil?

Add shrimp after the potatoes are nearly tender and the corn and sausage have had time to heat through. Shrimp should usually be one of the last ingredients added. Once they are done, drain the boil promptly instead of letting them continue sitting in very hot water.
