How Long to Cook Crab Legs in a Seafood Boil

Crab legs are one of the most popular seafood boil ingredients, but they do not need nearly as much cooking time as potatoes or sausage. Most frozen crab legs sold in grocery stores have already been cooked before freezing, so at home you are usually reheating them rather than cooking them from raw.

How Long to Heat Crab Legs in a Seafood Boil

For common pre-cooked snow crab legs, about 4 to 6 minutes in hot simmering or boiling liquid is often enough once the pot returns to temperature. Larger king crab legs can take roughly 5 to 8 minutes, depending on thickness and whether they were fully thawed.

These are useful ranges, not rigid rules. Extra-large clusters and very cold crab can take longer. Check the package if your crab is sold raw, because raw crab requires a different cooking process.

When to Add Crab Legs

Cook your slowest ingredients first. Small red potatoes usually go into the pot before corn, sausage, or seafood. Add pre-cooked crab legs toward the end so they heat through without becoming dry or stringy.

How to Tell Crab Legs Are Ready

  • The shell should be hot all the way through.
  • The meat should be hot when the shell is opened.
  • The crab should smell fresh and briny, not sour or strongly fishy.
  • The meat should remain moist and tender.

Season After Draining

Drain the boil, then coat the crab legs with seasoned butter. Melt butter, stir in Chef Bae® Seafood Boil Seasoning, and spoon or toss it over the crab, shrimp, corn, potatoes, and sausage.
